Sometimes you get lucky and stumble across a good restaurant, as we did in Venice. On our way to our favorite cichetti bar, we walked down the right side of The Academia until we walked up the a gated garden entrance of San Trovaso Ristorante. We didn't follow familiar aromas down the street. It just so happened that we were in need of looking at our map to find out which side street would take us to Fondamenta Nani, closest to Cantine Schiavi, our ultimate destination. After reading the menu, we decided to have a few cichetti for starters, then head back to this restaurant for a pasta course as soon as it opened.
By the time we returned, San Trovaso had a garden full of patrons, enjoying their lunch in the sunshine. Another look at the menu showed how extensive it had been and it was regrettable that we hadn't enough room to try 2 courses. Out came the obligatory "pane" and we ordered beer while we made our pasta selections. Who knew they brewed their own beer in Venice? The meat selections looked so varied that I would return to this restaurant, on our next trip to Venice for a "secondo".
Yes, the plan was to order 3 pasta dishes, but we couldn't resist the prosciutto e melone, which is a perfect item to order on a hot day. Considering it was May, the melon was surprisingly sweet.
Okay, this isn't pasta either, but who can visit Venice without trying fried seafood? Our nephew couldn't, but since this came with polenta, he definitely tried a popular starch. How's that for a compromise?
Two of us opted out of "Plan B" and actually ordered pasta. Liking duck, Tagliatelle all'Anitra suited me just fine. My spouse is firmly devoted to trying every Spaghetti alla Carbonara in Italy. Both were exceptionally satisfying, competently prepared, and worth ordering again.
